At Pascale’s Liquors, you can trust that you get the best local and international beverages. You’ve seen Nick’s Picks of great products that he has discovered in his quest to find more new, high-quality drinks for his customers as well as better-quality, value-for-money alternatives to your everyday selections. If you’re looking for expert opinions on what to bring or stock up for your pool party or beach trip, you’ve come to the right place.
Homemade cocktails are great (for those of legal drinking age, of course), and if you’re into that, you can check out this list of best summer cocktails. But if you love the convenience of a good cocktail in cans, this guide will help you pick out the best ones from Cutwater. Fair warning, though, every canned cocktail is full-flavored, masterfully blended, and does not cut corners, so actually finding a favorite might be hard.
Cutwater Canned Cocktails: Background
Cutwater Spirits, a California-based brand, offers a range of canned cocktails. Each can is a ready-to-go, pre-mixed drink made from a variety of alcohol bases, including vodka, tequila, American whiskey, gin, and rum.
Cutwater began as a side project for Yuseff Cherney, head brewer at Ballast Point Brewery, and Jack White. Their success with liquor-based mixed drinks led them to move away from Ballast Point and start their own venture, which they named Cutwater. Today, Cherney remains the company's master distiller.
But where does the name 'Cutwater' come from? According to a 2017 article from Sandiegoville, the name is inspired by the Black Skimmer seabird, known for flying low and 'cutting' into the water with its long beak. A brand explains that Cutwater is a reference to this bird, which also reflects the brand’s distillation process, as most spirits are cut with water during the proofing process. Further, the Cutwater logo is a nod to its nautical inspiration, featuring the bow of a ship in the shape of the Black Skimmer in flight.
Cutwater is renowned for their award-winning cocktails made with real spirits. Their official description states: "From the ballpark to the beach, Cutwater allows you to bring the bar wherever you are."
Does Cutwater Margarita Use Real Liquor?
Cutwater uses real liquor in its all its prepared cocktails, not just the margarita variant, with most produced on-site at its San Diego-based distillery. However, by law, its tequila must be imported from Jalisco, Mexico. To comply, Cutwater partners with the Orendain family's tequila business to source all its tequila varieties, including añejo, blanco, and reposado.
Signature Drinks – The Cutwater Margarita
The Cutwater Margarita is a flagship product. This beverage combines premium tequila with natural lime juice, offering a refreshing and balanced hard seltzer. Variations include the Cutwater Lime Margarita, which features a stronger lime flavor, and the Cutwater Mango Margarita, which incorporates the sweetness of mango.
